new year, new country, new school, new chapter of my life!

soooo after some crazy 20 hours flight (LA to Toronto to Barbados to Grenada)  I'm finally here at St. George's University (SGU)! Woohoo!!

So here's what I learned from my 20 hours flying adventure:

1) Air Canada sucks

I was stuck in Toronto Airport for over 5 hours because the plane's toilet was broken. Thanks to Air Canada's broken toilet, I missed my flight from Barbados to Grenada, and Air Canada wouldn't take any responsibility for it because they said I didn't book the flight thru them.

2) LIAT (the Caribbean Airline) sucks also

Actually I already knew they are notoriously known for losing luggage from the SGU student online discussion boards before the trip. So I wasn't too upset when I found out they lost my luggage when I arrived Grenada last night. Thank God after 24 hours of nonstop calling LIAT's costumer service department I finally reunited with my luggage. yay!

3) Travel Insurance is a must if you wanna visit the Caribbeans

Too many things can go wrong..and it all happened on my trip...delayed flights, missing my connecting flight, losing my luggage...And none of the airlines would take responsibility. Air Canada said it's my fault for booking through a travel agent instead of booking directly through them, so I had to arrange my own alternative flights when Air Canada is the one that caused me to miss my connecting flight. Air LIAT said it's not their fault for losing my luggage because I'm the one that missed my connecting flight and had to take another flight instead....

Ok sorry for all the complaints...but anyways...I'm just happy that both me and my luggage are finally here in Grenada!!!! And Grenada so far has been awesome!!! The weather is great, the campus is beautiful, and I'm right next to the beach! I like my dorm too...it's right next to the student center, the library, and most of the classrooms....and my room has its own bathroom and kitchen...and laundry is free! yay!

Orientation starts tomorrow...I'll try to upload some pics when i get the chance...

Casa Hogar Trip 11/29/08

It  was awesome going back to Casa Hogar this weekend!!

I haven't been down there for a while (last time I visited was April 2007), so the kids and the staff most likely don't remember me anymore, but I still felt like I was visiting some old friends because everyone there are just soooo warm and welcoming!

A taco stand we stopped by near the border. Yummy but sooooo spicy!!! I was dying during that one hour traffic jam before crossing the US customs ...at the end I couldn't hold it anymore and crapped all over my pants and my car seats.

Just kidding. I jumped off my car and fortunately found a really clean restroom with toilet paper. Super Spicy Taco = Explosive Diarrhea.

It was a very special day for Casa Hogar because one of the Orphanage alumni was getting married. So we helped prepare food for the wedding reception.

Master Chef Troy Hashimoto. It's so cool to see him faithfully utilizing his talents to serve these kids. Once a month he leads a team of volunteers to cook lunch for these kids.

Aww...aren't they adorable??

Great little helpers helping us prep for lunch

instant cup noodles...yummm

instant powdered mashed potatoes...yummm

After lunch we did some fun art activities with the kids. Their artworks will be displayed at the upcoming SWAMP Fest.

Speaking of SWAMP Fest, PLEASE help spread the word about this event!!!

It's gonna be one fun & casual night featuring more than 30 local artists expressing their talents in Spoken Word/Art/Music/Photography
. All proceeds will benefit Casa Hogar's special lunch program, eye care program, and the new land & building fund

.

It's gonna be on Dec 13 (Sat) 8pm in Orange. It will be awesome! I gurantee it!! You don't wanna miss this!!

That's Mama Carmen, the founder of Casa Hogar Ophanage. I got a chance to share with her about this event, and she's really encouraged and excited about it too!! It's amazing to see her and the staff devoting their whole life to provide a warm and loving home for these kids!

one step closer

thanks for everyone's jia-yo's....so i took my mcat again on 9/12....don't think i was made for that test....feel like i was more nervous and couldn't finish a lot of questions =/

but i finally took the courage to ask my research professor (whom i haven't talk to for 3 years) for a recommendation letter... met up with her yesterday at UCI med center and she said yes! woo-hoo! =)

so now i just need to get my 2nd application essay done and hopefully everything can be turned in soon before the Nov 15 deadline for St. Gerorge...

ok time for photo updates....one of the highlights from this summer was the summer arts camp that we did during last week of july...

the overall theme was masterpiece and each class had a specfici theme: ocean (youngest kids), jungle (middle) and space (oldest kids).....i was in charge of space class. out of the 3 classes, space is the most fun one, since i was the one that came up with space crafts and decoration ideas! haha

who said u need rocket scientists to figure out how to make a rocket? tanya and liz made this awesome rocket just by looking at a tiny picture i found on google (but we did took a long time figuring out how to make the rooftop)

can u tell what zoe is is painting?

it's an astronaut!

my awesome cartoon rocket

1st day was already chaotic...but we decided to do something super messay just to make things even more interesting....paper mache planets!

taking picutre in front of our Masterpiece sign before the kids totally ruin their Masterpiece t-shirts....the sign was designed by our very own ben sam, and hand-drawn replicated by genie..

good thing we only let our oldest kids play with paper maches....the younger kids were doing guided drawing...can't imagine how crazy it would be if they were doing paper mache also....

miss justine teaching the lesson of the day during large group time

after one day of drying, kids started painting their beautiful planets

many younger kids were camera shy...but kara has no problem showing off her work

unlike the younger kids, the older kids love taking pictures and make zombie faces.

more weird faces.....

in the begining i was kindda worry about working with older kids b/c i'm more used to working with 3 and 4 yr olds...and i was busy running around preping materials for different classes...but for some reason these kids really like me...probably b/c they love having me take their zombie faces....

.
jungle class making abstract faces

something interesting happend on 2nd day......earthquake! it was kindda funny how the adults were more freaked out by it than kids....for many kids it was their 1st time so they actually thought earthquake was fun.

3rd day kids learned how to draw self-portraits....doesn't that look exactly like alex? haha

younger kids made shoebox aquariums...

looks like ian is very happy with his giant parrot

isnt' that an awesome paper towel tube rocket?

besides getting a yummy lunch box, each day the kids also get a fun snack treat....this is one of my favorite ones....gummi worm with chocolate muffin dirts...

it's cool looking and tasty too! yumm

jungle class putting feathers on their colorful parrots

look who's coming out of the cave

last day each class had a special class project....space class decorated their giant space rocket...

they also made space costumes for the gallery night's Masterpiece musical....doesn't tom choe look sooo hot as super space straw man? haha

more zombie faces...

jungle class made giant jungle rainsticks.....which was one of the craft ideas that i really wanted to do...but took me and mike kwon forever to find the right nail sizes for these differeent sized tubes...

jungle class also made their giant cocoa pebbles volcanoe...the whole room smelled sooo goood

the finish product...yumm

it was everyone's last day but Ms. Ruby had to leave early and couldn't make it to the gallery night to see their musical...

awww...she's crying b/c she didn't want ms. ruby to leave...

ocean class decorated their giant sand castle with their personalized flags

kids practicing their hand motions for the musical

liz was so moved and started crying when the kids sang "potter's hands"...aww

last day we also had a giant bounce castle...how cool is that??

finally came the gallery night where the kids put on their Masterpiece musical which they practiced arduously during the week.

the kids were a bit shy compared to how they were during the practice sessions......but still did a superb job nontheless!

all the kids were super excited when they saw their artworks displayed for the gallery night

took mike and i forever to find these spot lights for the gallery night....we had to call so manh places and go to 3 different Lowes...but at the end it was all worth it....doesn't the space gallery look soooo awesome??

i'm glad i finally found a good use for all the cardboxes we had...they became our display tables...

isn't it cool that everything we made for the space classroom was glow in the dark??

yay for masterpiece!
